Visit Costa Rica for a Yoga Retreat or Teacher Training
After experiencing a 1-week yoga retreat in Costa Rica in March of 2020, I realized that this is something that everyone needs to do for their mental and physical well-being. In this blog, I’m going to discuss why Costa Rica is the perfect place to do a Costa Rica yoga retreat or teacher training, and why I have chosen Costa Rica to start running a yoga retreat and teacher training program.
Costa Rica lends itself perfectly to yoga because it offers the perfect balance of relaxation, adventure, nature, and beauty that brings peace and happiness to the mind, body, and spirit. My yoga retreat experience was at resort in Montezuma on the Nicoya Peninsula – one of 5 blue zones in the world where people live longer with lower rates of illness, and it was easy to see why!
When I arrived at the Resort, I was blown away by the beauty of the location. After giving me a tour of the resort, the friendly staff took me to my private jungle cabina where I was greeted by a family of howler monkeys in the trees outside my balcony. My breath was taken away, and I was mesmerized by the beauty of the jungle that surrounded me. After coming to my senses from staring at the awe-inspiring scenery on my patio, and the sun started to set, I decided to take an outdoor shower while the monkeys played in the trees above, and I realized what a great decision I had made coming to this magical place.
The week of this retreat went by far too quickly. The weather was perfect with sunshine and temperatures in the low 30-degree Celsius range every day. Some people might say it was too hot, but coming from Alberta in the middle of winter, I enjoyed every minute of it.
On the first day of the retreat, we were given the opportunity to sign up for whatever activities or spa treatments we wanted to do. There were so many options to choose from: surfing lessons, zip-lining, horseback riding, cooking lessons, Spanish lessons, a tour of the farm, a snorkeling excursion, a sunset beach trip to Santa Theresa, a waterfall hike, and a huge selection of spa services. Although part of me wanted this to be a relaxing week away from my hectic, fast-paced life in Alberta, a bigger part of me wanted to experience everything this amazing place had to offer, and I quickly filled my schedule up with activities and spa treatments. Although this didn’t leave a lot of time to sit and relax by the pool or read in my patio hammock, I was very glad I signed up for so many fun and memorable activities.
Aside from the amazing activities and spa treatments, I also enjoyed two yoga classes each day: an early morning vinyasa class overlooking the ocean and a sunset restorative class to wind down after a busy fun-filled day.
Leading up to the retreat, I was nervous that I would be surrounded by advanced yogi’s or find the classes too challenging, but I was surprised to find that most people at the retreat were complete beginners, and I found myself doing my own modifications to make the classes more challenging. If anyone is holding back from doing one of these retreats in fear that they are not fit enough or don’t have enough yoga experience, you can rest assured that these retreats are suitable for any level of experience and ability – at least that was my experience.
The meals and snacks at the resort were amazing as well – all very healthy, delicious, balanced meals with fresh produce sourced from their sustainable organic farm. Even though I ate like a king, I was surprised to find myself losing weight and feeling healthier and fitter from the nutritious food, fun activities, and complete lack of stress during this amazing week.
The end result of this week in paradise was a feeling of incredible health, happiness, and healing that I had never experienced to such an extent in my entire life. It was an eye-opening experience that I knew would change the course of my life. It made me realize just how healthy and I happy I would be if I could experience this environment and lifestyle on a regular basis. I decided to make it my goal to one day open my own yoga retreat and teacher training program in Costa Rica so that I can not only live this lifestyle on a regular basis, but also give others the opportunity to experience the same level healing and happiness that I enjoyed in this one-week retreat.
